Hannah Rogan - Journalist, Freelance Writer, Author

I have always loved writing. English was my favourite subject from a young age and I used to regularly spend my primary school break times writing long and complicated stories about horses, which were (thankfully) lost to posterity due to the feeble memory capacity of my school’s BBC computer.  However, somewhere in the course of growing up, I lost my confidence to pursue my passion. I still loved reading other people’s well-crafted words, but would never have imagined that I could write for a living myself. It probably didn’t help that I was distracted by wanderlust and spent the first few years after university working a series of random short-term jobs solely intended to fund my next round-the-world ticket.

Two things happened to bring me back to writing. The first was a throw away comment from a previous employer, for whom I was working as an admin assistant, who told me that he appreciated my letter-writing skills because I was able to take what he wanted to say and ‘make it sound fantastic’. He probably promptly forgot he said this, but it stayed with me and gave me the confidence to leave his company and start writing sales copy for the website of a local retailer! (Sorry John).

The second thing that happened was discovering long distance running. There is something about running that makes you feel more positive about life in general. The dedication and determination required to navigate the highs and lows of a marathon can certainly be channelled into other areas of your life and it is a good life lesson to recognise that everyone who crosses the finish line enjoys a sense of accomplishment, not just the race winner.  Taking up running as a hobby has also introduced me to some of my best friends and their support and encouragement was instrumental in giving me the confidence to set up my own business as a freelance copywriter in February 2019.

Writing articles for Proviz and managing the blog combines two of my life’s passions. I get genuinely excited about most of the content and it feels great to be part of a community that gets so much pleasure out of running, cycling and adventuring in the great outdoors.
